......then again....maybe not......

You will not BELIEVE what I have been through the past few months! Seriously. I have been working a lot recently and I know my last post was back in February, but so much has changed in the past few months...and I don't mean life wise. My skin has been through hell and back and I really am not talking figuratively. I....*sobs* I'm allergic.........*sobs harder* Oh lord! I'm allergic to Too Faced products.....*sobs uncontrollably*! I legit was using all Too Faced products on my face and eyes. Allow me to explain.

I was working a wedding back in April and basically all of March I was suffering from severe sinus infections which brought my asthma back and all this health stuff that really kind of doesn't matter. So I got better and I was healing and stuff, but then I started developing this weird reaction that I figured was from my asthma. My face would start tingling and I couldn't really breathe well and yeah...stuff that had both me and my doctor slightly concerned. I started developing a really bad rash on my face, my contacts wouldn't stop going blurry, my skin burned slightly when I had my foundation on and would tingle even worse. So I was upset that my face was red and bumpy and off to Michigan I went. I went and got all this hypo-allergenic skin care stuff and masks and junk to help my skin, which it did until I put my makeup on again. So Katie and I got back from Michigan and gradually it dawned on me....it was my makeup causing me to have this reaction. I went to work the next Monday will limited makeup on when my eyes started burning and then I realized....I tightlined my eyes with a Too Faced eyeliner and used Better Than Sex Mascara, so I stopped using Too Faced and found other products to use and my skin got better.

So I did what any rational person would do....gave away all my Too Faced stuff and bought new things. I bought the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Foundation and Concealor. Those always made my skin look really patchy for some reason, so eventually I mixed the foundation in with my Kat Von D Foundation and when I ran out of that.....well let's just say I was never happy with my makeup. I figured the problem out with that too. The Tarte Rainforest of the Sea products are water based.....my skin is oily. As the day went on and my skin inevitably got oily....hello basic science! Water and oil don't mix and my foundation separated from my face.

So here I am...two months later and I finally found something that works for me. I have been using the Makeup Forever Mat Velvet + Matifying Foundation. And may I just say how much I bloody love this stuff! My skin gets oily still, BUT even when I pat away the excess oil, my foundation doesn't budge! It is definitely $39 well spent...even if it is only 1 oz. But hey...you don't need much to cover your whole face so it has lasted me quite some time.

So yes, my skin has been to hell and back, but I have to say, I definitely am happy that my ENTIRE kit wasn't Too Faced, or I would have been royally screwed! But just for laughs....allow me to tell you of the tale of when I ordered foundation from one of my favorite companies. Even though it is pricey, I love Mirenesse Australia because they have some of the BEST liquid liners I have ever had the privilege of using. Katie ordered me their lightest foundation from Haute Look one day and when it came, I was super excited! I did my makeup with it (this is before I had Makeup Forever) and......well......let me just say that their lightest shade was about 2 shades too dark for me! I think my mom is using it now.....not sure, but it was funny!

I will be back with a review of all the skin care and new products I have been using since the Too Faced Incident soon, but for now....ta!

And the winner is...........

Me! I'd like to thank the academy, my mom, my sister, and the rest of my family for putting up with and helping me "feed" my obsession; to the wonderful ladies at Melt Cosmetics, Jeffree Star, and Benefit Cosmetics for making such wonderful make up. *music starts* I'm not done yet!

Hello one and all! In my last post, I said I was getting new products and I would review them shortly after receiving them. Well I have received all of my new makeup, either by post or going out and buying it, so here we go!

First , these are the products I now have:

- Benefit Watt's Up Highlighter
- Melt Cosmetics Dark Matter Stack
- Melt Cosmetics Love Sick Stack
- Jeffree Star Cosmetics Velour Lip Scrub "Strawberry Gum"
- Jeffree Star Cosmetics Velour Liquid Lipstick "Androgyny"

So without further ado, here we go! Side note: if you didn't read that last part in Mario's voice, you're wrong.

Benefit Watt's Up Highlighter:
This name is so much fun to say...Watt's Up!!! This highlighter is a cream to powder formula and is so easy to blend out! The more you pack it on, the more pigmented it gets, but it is very pigmented at first swipe. It is so creamy at first, but the more I manipulate it to blend it in, the more it sets itself. I really am falling hard for this product! I still love my Becca highlighter, but until I can get more....I will most definitely keep using (and saying) Watt's Up! Benefit as a brand is cruelty free as well. https://www.benefitcosmetics.com/us/en/

Melt Cosmetics Stacks in Love Sick and Dark Matter
I have way more eyeshadow than I care to admit and I just had to splurge and get these stacks! I have been wanting these two for the longest time and I finally have my hands on them! Let me just say....Ho-ly crap this stuff is pigmented! It blends like butter and you can mix and match the stacks together! I have to say, I already have three favorite shades, "Promiscuous", "Love Sick", and "Enigma". I am in absolute love with these stacks! They are so creamy and I don't have much, if any, fall out with them! They are a bit pricey, but well worth it as the pans are fairly big and you don't need a whole lot of product. The stacks are $48 each, but as I said, you do get a lot of product for that price. Oh and did I mention that the stacks are magnetic and you can shape them however you want to apply! Melt is of course cruelty free! http://www.meltcosmetics.com/

Jeffree Star Cosmetics
I have been waiting and waiting to get my hands on the oh so coveted shade of lipstick, and I finally got it! But I also ordered a lip scrub along with it, so I'll review that first! The Velour Lip Scrub in Strawberry Gum is sugar based and completely edible! It is such a good way to prep your lips before using ANY lipstick to get a nice smooth base before applying. "It's so tasty too, just like candy!"  It really does taste good! My lips always feel so good after using it too, and you get a pretty large pot for $12 and you don't need a lot anyways, so this stuff will last you a very long time. The Lip Scrub is Vegan, Cruelty Free, Paraben Free, and Gluten Free as well so that just makes it so much better!

Now...for the lipstick! I have been DYING to get Androgyny for such a long time and when Jeffree announced it was coming back, I nearly died of excitement....okay that's a bit of an overstatement, but hey....I'm dramatic. As soon as this lipstick was available, I threw it in my cart and checked out in less than a minute! I'm not even kidding, It went live at 1:00 PM EST and I checked out by 1:01 PM EST! This lip color also sold out very quickly, so I am so happy I got it when I did! It arrived and let me just say....this description is directly from the website, which will be linked below: Be warned: this shade might be your new obsession ;) Sultry, plum mauve, matte and extremely addicting.

I have to agree with this description 100%!!!!!!! It is my new obsession!!!! I don't really want to wear any other lip color. I love love love this shade so much! The formula of it doesn't dry my lips out like most liquids do, the doe foot applicator is so amazing and I can actually fill my lips in without much need of clean up around my lips! I don't need a liner with it, and I am just madly in love with it! Next time it is available....I buying 2! I cannot stress how much I love this lipstick!!!! The lipstick is $18 and is Vegan, Cruelty Free, Paraben Free, and Gluten Free! http://jeffreestarcosmetics.com/

Alright...whew! That's done....I'm sure that I am going to have other things to review and other favorites, but for now...that's it! I hope everyone reading this has a wonderful day, and I will be back soon.....ish for another post!

A few of my favorite things.......

Hello, hello, hello! I am back, and once again I am so sorry for taking so long for to write this post. I'm not even going to say I was busy or that things got hectic....how's this? Life got in the way and I'm horrible at keeping up with this! I have a ton of new makeup to try and am currently trying and will write a review soon for these products, but today I am going to review some new products I have acquired in the past few months. So without too much delay, here are just a few of my favorite things!

Skin care:
-Coast to Coast: Coastal Lightweight Moisture Lotion Wild Rosella and Lavender for Normal/Dry Skin:

As you all know, I struggle with extremely oily skin, but I also struggle a bit with some dryness in some areas if I don't scrub my face before applying makeup, which I don't do everyday anyways. Scrubbing your face makes your skin go into overtime on producing oil and that is the last thing I need! So I have been trying to find a good lotion that moisturizes my skin and doesn't make my skin super oily later in the day. I was at Ulta with Katie about a month ago and saw this lotion on sale and decided to give it a shot. Ho-ly crap is this stuff amazing! Not only does it smell sooooo good, but it is so lightweight and not very oily! I don't get dry patches on my skin and I don't get super oily either! Coast to Coast is an Australian brand, cruelty free, contains sunscreen and UV filters, as well as marine extracts. This product is all in all amazing for your skin! I am in love with it! I don't quite remember the full price but I believe we purchased it for around $6 on sale. Worth the purchase!   http://coasttocoastaustralia.com.au/

Face:
-Laura Geller Spackle Treatment Even Tone Makeup Primer:

I wrote about Hourglass primer a while ago and swore by that stuff, and still do. But I got this makeup primer from Ulta as a sample and decided to give it a go! My makeup looks so perfect after I use this primer. It is a bit thicker than the Hourglass primer so I do have to use more to cover my face, but it sets in no time and my foundation looks just amazing! I can't even describe it! I did my research on the Laura Geller brand and nowhere on the site, that I could find, does it say that this brand is cruelty free, but I did type in "cruelty free" into the search bar and the Spackle Treatment was amongst the products in the list, so I will continue using it....for now.  http://www.laurageller.com/face/spackle-primer.html

-NYX HD Concealer in the shade CW01:

Can I just say that I didn't usually use concealer, but I have been for just about a year, but I never expected to fall so deeply in love with a product! I like NYX anyways, but this concealer is just incredible! It is full coverage and highlights very well...considering I got the lightest shade possible. At first I did find it a bit difficult to blend properly, but it blends out really well. It sets really well for me and even though it does get into my fine lines under my eye and crease in there, it doesn't crease anywhere else. I do use it on my lids as a base and I have not had any problem with eyeshadow creasing in a long time! I believe that this concealer is around $10, not the most inexpensive but also not the most expensive concealer.

-NYX Mineral "Set it & Don't Fret It" Matte Finishing Powder in the shade Light/Medium:

Okay so this one I must admit that I was a bit skeptical using for the first time as it is a loose powder. I only ever used pressed powders to set my makeup or as my foundation in general about a year ago....lord how far I've come! I started branching into loose powders when I was watching a makeup tutorial on Jeffree Star's Youtube channel (if you haven't checked it out, you should)! I decided to try it and I was hooked! I don't "bake" in the sense of I let it sit for 5-10 minutes on my face, but I set my concealer with the loose powder using a damp beauty blender and then while I load my brush up to set the rest of my face I let the loose powder "bake" for 30 seconds and brush off the excess and continue with my makeup routine! This powder is so incredible, I really do enjoy using it. My face doesn't look as cakey as it used to, shocking considering I use way more products than I used to, and it just feels so soft after! Again, I'm not too sure of the price, but I do believe that this was about $10. All NYX products are cruelty free.  http://www.nyxcosmetics.com/

-BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector in the shade Opal:

I got this as a trial from Ulta the same day I got the Laura Geller Spackle Treatment. I haven't been highlighting my cheeks for very long, again pretty recent development in my makeup routine....thanks again Jeffree Star! But this.....I can see why everyone has been making such a fuss about this! Oh...my.....lanta! When I wear this on my cheeks.....and I top it with my Physicians Formula.....My highlight is brighter than my future! I cannot believe how amazing that combo is! I know that I will definitely be buying the full size AND the powder as soon as humanly possible! I always SnapChat Katie whenever I do my full face just to show her my highlight! I swoon every day when I see this in my drawer! BECCA is also a cruelty free line!  https://www.beccacosmetics.com/

Eyes:
-Benefit Roller Lash Mascara:

I have sworn by my Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, and I have sworn by a lot of mascaras....and this mascara I will also swear by! This mascara is a dream! I love this stuff! It mixes so well with my other mascaras to create such an amazing look! This is amazing! The tube it comes in is amazing and the formula for it is so soft! It doesn't clump and it separates my lashes wonderfully! Benefit is cruelty free and this mascara is $24 and completely worth it!  https://www.benefitcosmetics.com/us/en

-Smashbox X-RATED Mascara:

This is a brand new acquisition for me and immediately I was amazed! Not only is the tube awesome, but the brush is amazing, the formula is super soft and doesn't clump, it separates my lashes really well, and smells so damn good! I don't know why I smell my makeup, but I do and this smells super good! I have been mixing this with my Roller Lash and the result is long lashes that are separate and full! Love love love this mascara! Smashbox is cruelty free and this mascara is $22!  http://www.smashbox.com/

Lips:
-Blackmoon Cosmetics Liquid Lipsticks in the shades Deranged and Purgatory:

I love me some liquid to matte lipsticks and my usual go to is Limecrime, but I found this cosmetics company through Instagram and the colors they offer are so beautiful and unique I just couldn't resist! I wanted these two colors the most and when their Black Friday sale came around, my mom bought them for me for Christmas, which I got for St. Nicklaus Day instead. The formula on these lipsticks are absolutely drool worthy! It is by far the softest lipstick I have ever worn! It smells amazing and the feel of it is just like touching velvet. I have been feeling very dark lately so these two colors are perfect for my moods! Deranged is a maroon and Purgatory is a very dark purple that looks nearly black. These lipsticks run for $18 each on http://www.blackmooncosmetics.com/ and Blackmoon is vegan and cruelty free.

-Limecrime Liquid Lipstick in the shade Black Velvet:

Yes you read that right....I said black! I now have black lipstick in my arsenal! And can I just say.....I really do rock it! Like I said before, I have been feeling the dark side a bit lately and this black is just perfect for when I want to say, "This lipstick shade is as black as my soul, but I'm really a nice person and this counts as being elegant as well!" I think Limecrime may have changed their formula since I first bought their products mostly due to the fact that the last three shades of theirs I have bought don't dry my lips out like my "Red Velvet" does. I don't know, but this lipstick looks terrifying at first but is quickly becoming one of my favorite colors! Limecrime is cruelty free and this lipstick is $20. https://www.limecrime.com/

Finishing Sprays:
-Urban Decay De-Slick and All Nighter Setting Sprays:

This is also a new thing for me, but I have to agree with how Katie put it one day..."You wouldn't do an updo and not spray your hair afterward. The same goes for your face!" Katie and I both started using these setting sprays at the same time and both of us love them! It really does help keep your makeup in place all day and keeps me from getting oily! I do use both the De-Slick and All Nighter as that helps keep the oil at bay. I honestly must say that if you are wearing any amount of makeup, doesn't matter if you wear the full mask or just do one little bit, you really should use some kind of setting spray. I prefer Urban Decay, but that is just me! Full Size Setting Sprays run for $30 and travel sizes run for $14. Urban Decay is cruelty free as well!  http://www.urbandecay.com/

Well then....whew! Now that all of that is done....I think I am going to go kick back and just relax for a bit! I hope everyone reading this had a wonderful holiday season, a wonderful New Year, and continues to have a wonderful year!

Makeup Review: Melt Cosmetics Part 2

I'm back with a review of the Melt Cosmetics lipstick. So apparently there was a delay with shipping while my package was in Florida....I'm assuming the delivery turtle got lost (<--- bit of an inside joke). So I got the lipstick on Wednesday, but I was at work so I told Katie to open it up for me to check and make sure that my most coveted lipstick was all in one piece....it was and all was good! I got home and FINALLY got to open up my package....it was so nice!!! There was a love note inside (I attached a love note to my order, so they send one back), a sticker, and of course my lipstick! I took some pictures of the box and packaging, and of the lipstick itself and after about 15 minutes of badly attempted selfies...I finally got a decent picture wearing Space Cake as well!

First and foremost, I would like to point out that the lighting in my room blows and I'm very sorry about that. Second, and most importantly, THIS LIPSTICK IS A-MAZING!!!!! My god this lipstick rocks! It is so creamy and pigmented and smells like heaven! I didn't even need lip liner in the picture I took....I wear it anyways, but not the point! Liner was not worn in the above photo. Absolutely LOVE this lipstick! When I wore it to work on Friday, I was getting compliments left and right! Also got my boss asking me what was with the grey lipstick. This lipstick is so creamy....until it gets cold. That was the ONLY downside to it. The salon I work in is EXTREMELY cold and all of my matte lipsticks harden in there, so it really wasn't much of a surprise. Anytime I tried to just touch up the inner corners, the lipstick just clumped up a bit and made it pretty difficult to apply. I must say that the longevity of the lipstick is amazing as well! I could touch my lips and it felt like I wasn't wearing anything on them, it is very lightweight and smooth. Absolutely loved it! When I took it off later that day, I always wet my lips by licking them and, I must say that Melt also has a pretty decent taste to it....it sounds weird, but it does.

So on a scale of 1-10, I give this lipstick and this company a 20! Two thumbs up! 5 Stars! If you are looking for highly pigmented makeup that is absolutely great, Melt Cosmetics is what you want! Did I forget to mention that a good portion of their products are vegan? Cause they are!

Space Cake Lipstick: $19

Makeup Review: Melt Cosmetics Part 1

I am back with another review, and I didn't wait more than a few months! Okay so being completely honest here...I actually won't have the makeup I ordered from Melt until tomorrow possibly....last I checked it was in Florida. This is more of a review of the actual company, which I am more than impressed with!

In case you have no clue what Melt Cosmetics is, it is a makeup company created by two women in the makeup industry. I discovered them not that long ago from following one of the creators, Lora, on Instagram. I checked out their site and the colors alone are amazingly pigmented and beautiful! I'm leaving a link to their website below.

The one shade I have wanted since I found the site finally came back in stock last week and so after getting paid and paying bills (barf...adulthood), I ordered this lovely grey lipstick in the shade "Space Cake"! I went through the confirming of everything and the paying of it, and just when I looked at the shipping information, I saw that it automatically set to shipping Priority 2 Day shipping! I was shocked and so happy! I placed my order and went about my work day. Around 1 pm, I checked my emails and found something I really wasn't expecting...my shipping confirmation email saying my lipstick had already shipped. 3 HOURS AFTER ORDERING! Super fast! On top of this, at the bottom of each email, it states that if you see something wrong (i.e. address, name, zip code, order) you can reply to the email and they will fix it! Just above the tracking number, it also states, "Want to stalk your mailman? Track your package." I found that pretty funny! Honestly, without even having received my lipstick, I am already super impressed with this company and its customer service!

Apparently my lipstick will be arriving tomorrow, so providing it arrives in the mail room before the mail man sets out with letters, I should get it and I will do a review of it as soon as I use it!

Melt Cosmetics....good on ya for amazing customer service!

Makeup Review: Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer

I told you I would be back today!!!!! To be fair....I'm writing this two minutes after yesterdays post went up....sorry not sorry. Like I promised, another review of the new primer!

So after I got the Kat Von D Primer and Liquid Foundation, I went back two weeks later to Sephora to grab the Powder Foundation and had enough points to get a couple of the trial sizes of the Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer just to give it a try. I had heard that anything that goes on top of it becomes waterproof and just have heard amazing things about this primer, so I wanted to give it a shot. Within two days of having it, the waterproof aspect was put to the test! I got water AND hair color on my face and my makeup did not budge! Already massively impressed! What really sold me on this amazing primer was the following story!

So I decided to leave my house 10 minutes earlier than normal to beat traffic I was sure to have on the way to work considering the Pope is in town, so I packed up all my eye makeup and lipstick stuff, checked my face one more time just in case I needed to blend some more of the blush or bronzer, and left my house. I got halfway down the toll road in no traffic when I realized that I had forgotten one massively important thing.....my eye primer! *GASP* Now as I suffer from extremely oily eyelids in the first place....this distressed me greatly! I just KNEW my eyeshadow was going to crease almost the moment I put it on! I prayed to the collective gods of makeup hoping that the Hourglass Primer and the Kat Von D Primer/Foundation mix would be more than enough to get me through the work day! I got to work and did my eye makeup with very little hope for the future and went into work. I avoided all mirrors until I had to touch up my lipstick after lunch. I put on a brave face and moved my pocket mirror up to check my eyelids, with little hope. What I saw was shocking though! My eyeshadow hadn't budged! It hadn't moved an inch! It looked just as perfect as when I put it on! That is the was it stayed until I got home around 7 that evening! It had JUST begun to get slightly oily when I got home, but still looked good! I was SO amazingly happy! Still am! So, as expensive as this stuff is....it is well worth the buy! You can find it at Sephora if you are looking for a new primer and I will list the prices below for each size!

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer:

0.33 oz: $18

1 oz: $52

2 oz: $72

Like I said...they are a bit pricey, but well worth the money!

Makeup Review: Kat Von D Foundation and Primer

Hello, hello and welcome back to my blog! I know that the last thing I wrote was that Katie and I were moving to LA....but that didn't happen, unfortunately. Long story short with this one:
Katie and I were all set to leave, had an apartment lined up and everything, I even had two boxes pack (still do to be honest...I know...I'm lazy), and then suddenly, as quickly as everything sprung into action, everything fell through. The apartment, the school, everything. So now we are waiting a year, maybe....hopefully...and working to save up money and figure life out. I'm now a receptionist at a salon in Arlington. Katie is a stylist at the same salon, but in Fair Oaks.

So now that we have all that crap out of the way, I will move on to the true purpose of this post. I'M DOING A MAKEUP REVIEW! So recently, I have been struggling to find something to battle my oily skin so that it wouldn't show through before I left work, but alas....nothing seems to be working. So I did a little research and upon running out of my BH Cosmetics liquid foundation...I went out and spent a little more money on myself and my makeup! I decided to try out the Kat Von D Lock It Primer and Liquid Foundation....and fell MADLY in love with it! The Foundation is full coverage, but if you mix it with the Primer (which is water based....not silicone so it doesn't feel oily as it goes on), you can get lesser coverage. My current ratio is 1:1, 1 pump Primer, 1 pump Liquid Foundation, and I get medium coverage. As I soon ran out of my Too Faced Cocoa Powder Pressed Powder Foundation, I bought the Kat Von D Lock It Pressed Powder Foundation as well and it works so well! I absolutely love the coverage and matte look I get with it! My face still gets pretty oily, but I don't need to pat it as often as I used to. I did get a new primer to try underneath of all of this....but that is the next review, which will be up tomorrow!

So, if you are looking to try a new foundation set, I HIGHLY recommend the Kat Von D Lock It products. They are pretty pricey, but entirely worth it as you do not need a lot of anything! If you are interested, I will have the prices of these three products below.

Kat Von D Lock It Featherweight Primer: $32

Kat Von D Lock It Liquid Foundation: $35

Kat Von D Lock It Powder Foundation: $ 35

I have only found these products at Sephora, so these are the Sephora prices!

Until tomorrow!

Exciting News!

I know, I know....I really need to get better at blogging, and I can say I'm busy and everything, but still. I really need to pick up on it! But that's what I'm writing about now.....I want to keep everyone in the big ball of wibbly wobbly stuff that is my life! I have a very exciting announcement to make, but I need to tell you a little back story first....per my usual blog posts!

Back at the beginning of March, I got the chance to fly out to Los Angeles to visit one of my best friends and just relax. I did some sight seeing, met a few celebrities, saw the entire city and the ocean from the Griffith Observatory, and a bunch of other things! It was so much fun and considering I hate heat and cities, I fell madly in love with LA and didn't want to leave! so now that we are past the back story, I can get to the part that really matters! The first day that I went out to explore, I called the Uber and was heading into the city when I saw it! I saw a building with amazing pictures of makeup and designs and it caught my eye. All I could think of was that I loved the designs and wanted to see what it was...and then I saw it! IT WAS A SCHOOL FOR MAKEUP! I had to double take considering I didn't think I saw it correctly, but I did and you wouldn't believe the speed that I got my phone unlocked and searching! I looked the school up and was amazed! Later that evening, I had cooked dinner and I was sitting talking to my friend and her roommate about the school talking about it and they were saying I should go look at it...I agreed that it wouldn't hurt and kind of pushed it aside. It wasn't until later that week that I called the school and toured it. Again...I immediately fell in love and decided I would talk to my family when I got home and we could decide from there. I got home and everything kind of went into motion really quickly!

So time for the announcement.....I'M MOVING TO LA! Again, everything sprang into motion really quickly and I applied to the school and we will be going into final details in about a week...but that isn't the only great news......KATIE IS COMING WITH ME!!!! I convinced Katie to join me in the school and considering the careers we want to pursue....this is the right choice! We are extremely excited to be going on this adventure and starting something new! But what does this mean for the website and our freelancing? Well....we are taking this all to the West Coast! With joining a makeup school, we are going to learn amazing tricks and tips that we can share with you on here! So, that is the exciting news....Katie and I are moving to Los Angeles in just a short amount of time and we are going to a makeup school!

You guys can follow us on this journey as well, I will be filming the drive out and a little bit here and there and will be posting on my personal Facebook page, but I will also link the videos here!

Beauty Tip of the Month

Happy New Year!!! Okay, okay...I know! I am kind of terrible at this whole keeping up with my blog type thing! But I will try to post more often! Maybe I'll even try a monthly favorites type thing! Who knows! I have gotten new products that I am absolutely in love with, but I think I'll do that in a different blog post. As I have said in the past blog posts, I have been super busy between salon work and life, it all just kind of got in the way. But that is one thing I want to talk about today. Life getting in the way and that six letter word....STRESS! We all stress over different things but the one thing that doesn't differ, is the fact that stress affects us. Stress can affect us all in different ways, but it does affect us.

Statistically, Americans are more stressed that any other allied country in the world due to the amount of work we do. 44% of Americans are more stressed today than they were five years ago. But what is stress? Stress is your body's response to doing anything demanding. When you start to stress, your body releases the hormone mixture of cortisol, epinephrine/norepinephrine, and adrenaline creating a reaction of your body sensing danger and throwing you into "fight or flight mode". The more you stay in this state of stress, the more energy you are depleting and the more tired you become. This state can also bring about acne, obesity, suppress your immune system, and many other things. Being stressed can also lead to higher risks of heart disease, heart attacks, and strokes. With all these hormones rampaging your body, your blood gradually becomes sort of poisoned from the stress.

"But Alyx, how does this apply to beauty?" It's simple. The more you stress, the more you lose sleep. The more you lose sleep, the more tired you become. The more tired you become, the more tired you look. The more tired you look, the more makeup you use. And the more makeup you use, the more you risk going out looking like this:

That was a good look for Robin Williams in the 90's, not for everyone nowadays! But looking tired isn't the only thing stress can lead to. It can lead to hair loss, weight gain (as stated above), mood swings, and many other things.

"Okay Miss Smarty Pants, if I'm stressed out, how can I relieve stress?" Glad you asked! Finding something you enjoy doing is a wonderful stress reliever. Reading, writing, exercise, math questions (for you math people out there), dancing, listening to music, talking, laughing,  kick boxing, taking a nice hot bath, movies, YouTube videos, reading my blog posts (shameless self-promoting), this list could go on and on! Whenever someone asks me how I don't get stressed, I say, "Because I have found my bliss." and honestly, I have. I read and write, listen to music, watch YouTube videos, find new shows to watch on TV and Netflix, and I play with makeup! We all get stressed, but it's all in how we deal with it. We really do live only one time, unless you believe in reincarnation. Why do we want to spend the one life we have to live stressed and unhappy?

Until next time everyone. And remember, laugh more, find your bliss, and stay beautiful!

Makeup Tip of the Week

I actually made it before the month was out.....WOOHOO!!! So this week/month for my blog...I'm going to do a bit of a rant whilst giving you some advice! This is also going to be a multi-tip blog! So, without further ado....(I know, I know...I usually have a back story, an essay, history lesson, and then some!) here are the tips I bring to thee!

1) Lighting, lighting, lighting

In cosmetology school, or at least the one I went to, we learned about how lighting affects EVERYTHING! This includes hair color, skin tone, shading, highlighting, etc. There are three different types of light. There is incandescent light, fluorescent light, and natural light. Incandescent light is the light that makes the warmer (red) tones come out in your skin and hair, which makes you look more tan. Fluorescent light is the light that makes the cool (blue) tones come out in your skin and hair, which makes you look more pale, tired, etc. Natural light is just that...natural. It is the light that comes straight from the sun, which is the best light that you can use! So, let me give you a scenario that has happened to me before. I was doing makeup on a client who wanted a very simple, natural look and she said she liked how my eyeshadow was. I was using a new palette that is all natural tones and all of the colors brighten up as you blend. I always start with a darker color on the outside of the eye and move inward. I was working in a combination of natural and incandescent light so it can make the eyeshadow look darker than normal. When I finished with the dark brown color, she looked in the mirror and said that the makeup was too dark. I finished the makeup and she still said it was too dark, so I lightened it up as much as I could without removing the makeup and starting over. When she walked into the next room, which was filled with natural light (completely white room with many windows), she saw her makeup and realized that it wasn't so dark after all. But this actually leads me into my next tip:

2) TRUST YOUR STYLIST/MUA

I'm one that is usually quick to trust, but once you lose that trust...it is gone. A good portion of stylists went to school, worked for a year or more and took their test and got licensed for one reason. They love this industry! I love being able to turn someone around in my chair and make them feel as beautiful as I saw them when they walked in! That is my favorite part! But the thing is, we know what we are doing. We know how lighting affects skin tone and color, we know what colors will work with your skin tone or what will make your eyes pop. Yes it can be scary to let someone you may have just met have all your trust, but we really do know what we are doing. I was trained on hair and makeup from one of the best schools in the country and I have picked up things from the various shows and shoots I have done in the past, so although there is more and more for me to learn, I do know what I am doing. Which leads me to my next point:

3) TELL THE TRUTH

We stylists are tougher than you think we are. The one thing that I want when you leave my chair, is to be happy with the finished look that I have given you. If when your stylist or makeup artist is done and presents you with the finished look and you aren't satisfied with it in any way, please, PLEASE, PLEASE  tell your stylist what you don't like! We won't cry or be angry, we will do our best to fix what needs fixing and do our best to make you happy with your results! It makes us happy to see you walk out pleased with your hair/makeup. We will be angry if you say you like what we gave you and then complain later to the front desk or online that we didn't do a good job and didn't give you what you want. Which kind of leads me to my last point:

4) Know when to RUN!

Trying to figure out how to start this part is harder than most, so I guess I will just jump right in and say it. If a stylist is willing to keep highlighting, lightening, relaxing, doing that Brazilian blowout treatment without educating you on the dangers of continuing those services...run, RUN FAST AND FIND SOMEONE ELSE! Your hair can break, fall out, something stylists commonly call a "chemical cut"! It's not pretty! So if your stylist is okay with continuing to do damaging services, run away and save your head. If your stylist educates you on why you should not do those services...keep them around, they want you to be happy!
